Mykola Lysenko was born in an old and respected Cossack family. In 1852, he began studying in Kyiv and continued at the Second Kharkiv Gymnasium, took private piano lessons with Yosyf Vilchek and Mykola Dmitriev, and performed widely on the piano.
In 1859, he attended courses at Kharkiv University, and in 1860, transferred to Kyiv University, graduating with an honors degree in natural sciences in 1865.
During his studies, Lysenko took an active part in public activities, joined the Kyiv Hromada and different cultural groups, founded the Kyiv University student choir, organized concerts, wrote his first compositions, and embarked on several folklore expeditions in order to explor
