    • Grace was born in Bamburgh and spent her youth with her parents at Longstone Lighthouse. Her father, William Darling, was the lighthouse keeper. As Grace grew older, she began assisting her father and often spent nights at the lighthouse, gazing into the dark distance.

    Grace knew that one day she would have to perform a heroic act that would save many lives.

    The Rescue Mission
    On September 7, 1838, while on duty at the lighthouse, Grace witnessed the launch of the British steamship "Forfarshire." A severe storm was raging in the vicinity of the lighthouse.
